Acetylcholinestrase

An enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine

Acetylcholine

A molecule released by neurons at the neuromuscular junction that causes muscle contraction

Arachnoid mater

A delicate fibrous membrane forming the middle of the three coverings of the central nervous system

Autonomic nervous system

A part of the nervous system that innervate smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and gland cells

Central nervous system

The brain and spinal cord

Cerebrum

Largest most superior part of the brain. Involved in motor function and thought

Cerebellum

Second largest part of the brain. The "automatic" pilot

Diencephalon

Causal part of the prosencephalon composed of the dorsal thalamus, epithalamus, and hypothalamus

Frontal lobe

The anterior part of each cerebral hemisphere, in front of the central sulcus

Hypothalamus

Region of brain regulating body temperature, the autonomic nervous system and endocrine system

Medulla oblongata

Most causal subdivision of the brainstem. Immediately continuous with spinal cord

Meninges

The three membranes covering the brain and spinal cord

Mesencephalon

The midbrain

Neurilemma

The delicate membranous covering that forms the myelin sheath around the axons of the peripheral nervous system

Neuroglia

The supportive cells of the nervous system

Neuron

Any of the conducting cells of the nervous system

Neurotransmitter

Any of several chemical substances that transmit nerve impulses across a synapse to a post synaptic element

Occipital lobe

Most posterior lobe of each cerebral hemisphere

Ohm's law

The principle that the strength or intensity of an unvarying electric current is directly proportional to the electro motive force and inversely proportional to the resistance of the circuit

Parietal lobe

The middle part of each cerebral hemisphere behind the central sulcus

Pons

The band of nerve fibers in the brain connecting the lobes of the midbrain, medulla and cerebrum

Somatic nervous system

Section of the nervous system responsible for sensation and control of muscles

Synapse

The junction across which a nerve impulse passes from an axon terminal to a neuron, a muscle cell, or a gland cell

Temporal lobe

The lateral lobe of each cerebral hemisphere

Ventricle

The ventricles of the brain are a communicating network of cavities filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
