Do capillaries have oxygen? |
Yes |
What type of blood vessels carry blood away from the heart? |
Arteries |
What type of blood vessels contact tissue cells and directly serve cellular needs? |
Capillaries |
What type of blood vessels carry blood toward the heart? |
Veins |
Do arteries carry oxygenated blood? |
Yes, except the pulmonary and umbilical arteries |
Do veins carry oxygenated blood? |
No |
All blood vessels have three layers except which type? |
Capillaries, they are one cell thick |
Whats a lumen? |
The hole, the channel or hole in the center of the blood vessel (the space in the blood vessel) |
Why do veins have valves? |
To keep the blood from back flowing. The arteries have pressure to keep the blood flowing forward but the veins do not so they have valves |
Why does the artery have elastic lamina but the veins do not? |
The arteries have to contract and the veins do not |
Why is the lumen larger in the vein? |
The veins are responsible for draining blood. Most of your blood is in the veins at any given time. |
What is the Tunica intima? |
Layer that is in direct contact with blood, its very very smooth. It is designed to prevent friction. |
What is an aneurysm ? |
The separation of the layers of the blood vessels. The tunica intima erodes and blood begins to go in between the the muscular layer, builds up between the two layers, causes a bulge and eventually burst. #1 cause is high blood pressure, #2 is alcohol |
What is the tunica media? |
The middle layer of the blood vessel. The smooth muscle and sheets of elastin. |
What is the tunica adventitia? |
The ouster layer of the blood vessels. It contains collagen fibers that protect and reinforce. Contains vasa vasorum, nourishes the external layer. |
When someone has a aneurism and survives, which layer is responsible for holding it together |
tunica adventitia |
What are the elastic conducting arteries? |
Aorta and major branches off the aorta |
What blood vessel plays the greatest role in regulating blood flow to tissue? |
Arterioles |
Where does the exchange of gases, nutrients, waste, and hormones take place? |
Capillaries |
What are the three types of capillaries? |
1. Continuous Capillaries 2. Fenestrated Capillaries 3. Sinusoidal Capillaries (sinusoids) |
