List the three general functions of the nervous system.
Sensory receptors gather information by detecting changes inside & outside body. They monitor external environmental factors such as light & sound intensities as well as temperature, oxyge concentration, & other conditons of body's internal environment.
Sensory receptors convert their info into nerve impulses, which are then transmitted over peripheral nerves to CNS. There signals are integrated - brought together creating sensations, adding to memory or helping produce thoughts.
After integration, conscious or subconscious decisions are made & then acted upon by means of motor functions.
Motor functions employ neurons that carry impulses from CNS to responsive structures called effectors. They can be subdivided into somatic and the autonomic nervous systems.
