Location of Somatic Afferent Cell Bodies
Dorsal root ganglion and cranial nerve ganglion.
Location of Somatic Efferent Cell Bodies
Ventral horn of spinal chord and certain cranial nerve motor nuclei.
3 Things Visceral Efferent Neurons Innervate
Smooth Muscle, Cardiac Muscle, and Glands.
First Neron of a Visceral Efferent System
Pre-ganglionic; cell body found in CNS.
Second Neuron of a Visceral Efferent System
Post-ganglionic; cell body found in PNS. Projects to effector organ.
Location of Sympathetic Pre-ganglionic Neuron Cell Bodies
Located in spinal chord from T1-L2. Located in long nucleus called the intermediolateral nucleus in the lateral grey horn.
Path of Axons of Sympathetic Pre-ganglionic Neurons
Leave CNS from ventral root, enter ventral primary ramus, enter sympathetic chain via white communicating ramus.
3 Fates of Sympathetic Pre-ganglionic Neurons That Enter the Sympathetic Chain.
1) Synapse on post-ganglionic neuron at entrance level.
2) Ascend or Descend to a different level and synapse on a postganglionic neuron.
3) Pass through chain into a splanchnic nerve to synapse on a collateral ganglion in abdomen.
Splanchnic Nerve
Preganglionic Sympathetic nerve which leaves the sympathetic chain and synapses on collateral ganglion in abdomen.
Location and Number of Sympathetic post-ganglionic Cell Bodies.
21-23 Found in the sympathetic chain on either side of spinal chord. Sympathetic chain extends from base of skull to coccyx.
Ganglion Impar
Where two sympathetic chains join at the coccyx.
Collateral Ganglion
Ganglia associated with the large vessels from the abdominal aorta. Preganglionic neuron is splanchnic nerve.
3 Fates of Postganglionic Neurons in Sympathetic Chain
1) Leave chain via grey communicating ramus to dorsal primary ramus.
2) Leave chain via grey communicating ramus to ventral primary ramus.
3) Leave chain via visceral branches and go directly to organs.
Superior Cervical Ganglion
Uppermost chain ganglion. Run along arteries as plexuses supplying structures in head.
Internal and External Carotid Plexuses
Postganglionic fibers from the superior cervical ganglion that travel along branches of carotid arteries for distribution in head.
3 structures in skin where sympathetic neurons innervate
Sweat glands, smooth muscle in blood vessels, and erector pili muscles.
Location of Preganglionic Parasympathetic Neuron Cell Bodies
Nuclei within brainstem and grey matter of sacral spinal chord.
CN-3 (name, cell body location, ganglion location, innervation, action)
Oculomotor Nerve
-Cell bodies in Edinger-Westphal Nuclues of midbrain
-Synapse at Ciliary ganglion located in Orbit
-Innervate sphincter and ciliary muscles of eye
-For accomodation of Lens and constriction of pupil.
CN-7 (name, cell body location, ganglion location, innervation, action)
Facial Nerve:
-cell body in superior salivary nucleus of medulla
Has 2 Ganglion:
1) submandibular ganglion located at base of tongue
-innervate submandibular and sublingual salivary glands
-stimulate salivation
2) pterygopalatine ganglion located behind maxilla
-innervate lacrimal glands, glands in nasal cavity, pharynx, and palate.
-stimulate secretion
CN-9 (name, cell body location, ganglion location, innervation, action)
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
-Cell body located in inferior salivary nucleus in medulla
-otic ganglion located at base of skull near foramen ovale
-innervate parotid gland
-stimulate salivation
CN-10 (name, cell body location, ganglion location, innervation, action)
Vagus Nerve
-Cell bodies in Dorsal Vagal Nucleus of Medulla
-Numerous small ganglia located near/within walls of thoracic and abdominal viscera
-innervate glands, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle
-various functions depending on organ
Plexuses of Vagus Nerve
-Cardiac Plexus
-Pulmonary Plexus
-Esophogeal Plexus
-Celiac Plexus
-Superior Mesentaric Plexus
Location of Sacral Parasympathetic Cell Bodys
Spinal chord at segments S 2,3,4.
Path of Presynaptic Sacral Parasympathetic Nerves.
Leave Ventral Primary Ramus of S 2,3,4 as pelvic splanchnic nerves. Fibers travel to organs in plexuses.
Location of Postganglionic Parasympathetic Sarcral Neurons
Located near/in wall of pelvic viscera and walls of descending and sigmoid colon.
Sacral Parasympathetic effector organs.
Glands and Smooth Muscle associated with pelvic viscera.
