Foreign Policy of Napolion III

It was very bad. Napoleon wanted to spread French influence throughout Europe. Supported nationalism. Allied with Britain in Crimean war to defeat Russia, fought Germany in Franco-Prussian war and Napoleon was captured.

Ended the Concert of Europe. More people died from disease. After England leaves continental power,
Russia leaves the war and is no longer the "Police Man of Europe"
Count Cavour

A modern liberal. He looks to England and wants the same for Piedmont. Wants Italy to unite under Piedmont and disagrees with Manzini.

Piedmont's Role in Unification

Piedmont was an industrialized and educated state in northern Italy. Many nationalists and Cavour wanted Italy to be united under Piedmont.

Giuseppe Garibaldi

He creates secret societies in Italy that terrorized Italy in the name of unification and republic. He was the leader of the revolutionary group known as the Red Shirts that won against the Austrian army.

Otto von Bismark

Big time conservative but still wanted to unify Germany for his own thirst for power. Even though he was a conservative he made liberal reforms to Germany such as allowing free education. Was a realpolitik and an opportunist. He was appointed to tame the German Parliament and increase the size of the army.

Steps/Strategy in German Unification

Bismark was able to work around the German Parliament to build a strong army because the parliament was very weak. Bismark refuses to listen to Parliament and issues to collect taxes to build a large army and parliament does nothing.

The Austro-Prussian War

Bismark defeats Austria with Italy as an ally but makes peace with Austria. The peace made says that Austria would be left alone if Austria left Prussian/German land alone.

The Franco-Prussian War

Bismark finds a way to wage war because that would unify Germany. War is started when Bismark changes a telegraph made by the Prussian king back to Napoleon to anger the France dictator and France waged war with Prussia. Prussia creates a draft in order to build the army that is very flexible. Industrialization of Germany allows them to win war. Napoleon is captured as prisoner and a commune is declared in Paris that Bismark puts down. It's ended by the Treaty of Frankfurt.

Dual Monarchy of Austria

Austria becomes the Dual Monarchy of Austria Hungry after the Franco-Prussian war.

By Karl Max who was a leader/ ultimate communist. He destcribes his goals which are to crate a class contiousness in the proletariat so they would have a revolution.
