reactions of colonial elites after certain acts were passed in british parliament
the colonial elites object to these new policies b/c England threatens to take away power from Colonists
Sugar act
this act gave individuals rewards for capturing smugglers. Some colonists didnt like this b/c they themselves were smugglers
Currency Act-
temporarily put a hault on printing paper currency
Stamp act
put a tax on all paper items. violence occurs in many colonies. Colonists burn stamps so they cant be used. people alo attacked the men in charge of stamping the paper
Gaspee Affair
1772- Gaspee is a naval patrol boat in place to catch smugglers. it was anchored in providence Rohode Iland and smugglers burnt it. English officials Decide to have the people responsible tried in London Instead of Rhode Island. This angers colonists b/c it shows lack of trust in the local judicial system
Hutchinson Affair
1772- Governor Hutchinson is told by his Massacheusets Colonial Congress that if he doesnt sign a bil then they will not pay him. the king then steps in and says GB will pay him and this upsets the colonial congress
Tea act-
1773- Parliament gave a bailout to the East India Trade company whos main business was with tea. The colonists who dressed as indians in the boston tea party were the competitores in tea.
Intolerable acts
parliament puts restriction on Massacheusets legislature which gives all the power to hutchinson. this act also closed the port of boston. the official name was "coersing acts"
Issue of soveriegnty
soverignty is political power. from british perspective sovereignty comes from one source, the king. From colonist perspective soveriegnty should be a division of power between the king first but then the colonists need some power too. this disagreement starts the revolution
Early fighting
in 1775 small battles break out before the official war breaks out. Lexington and Concord are some main battles
Concord
April- British come to concord looking for a weapons Cache. Minutemen defend the town. an unkown shot fires and starts the First battle. no rifles were found in concord. the minutemen then retreat towards Lexington
Lexington
in the afternoon after the battle in concord. this time the minutemen have gathered more men and are more prepared. and this time they also dont stand in front of the british but use guerrilla tactics from the woods. brits lose 70-80 men in there retreat back to boston
Fort in hudson river Valley
Ethan Allen leads a band of mountain men on the raid. he enters the commanders bedroom the commander is awakend by a saber put to his throat. Allen demands British to give up control of the fort and the fort is captured
Bunker hill
colonists get cannons and attack brish. british beat the colonists b/c colonists run out of ammo

The colonists were divided into 3rds. some thought that they should stay loyal to the British, some thought they should have a revolution and be done with the british and some were fence sitters

what was the preamble?
the preamble was the philisophical justification. this refers to the "laws of nature" coming from the enlightenment. the purpose was to justify the revolution to Fence sitters and the English people and win sentiments and help from other European Countries because a revolution like this has never happened before were the colonie turned its back on the mother country.
what was the Bill of Particulars?
Legal Brief, Bulk of the Document. its a long list of individual grievences towards the king and parliament. these all start with "he"

Paine Pamphlets
Thomas Paine writes 2 documents, the first is called "Common Sense" the second is called "the Crisis"
Common Sense
Thomas paine used regualr speech instead of lawyer talk. this document was printed and sold to the general public. it was distributed starting in january 1776
The Crisis
Colonists were losing badly by the end of 1776. paine visits George Washingtons Camp, he sees the bad morale and writes this to up morale. the next day washington and his men cross the delaware river on a sneak attack and defeat the British in battle
War of Independence
the war of independence stops in 1781 while the Revolution ends in 1787. the war was the actual fighting while the revolution was the political side of things. the war consisted of four phases
First phase of the War of Independence
Lasts till november of 1776- Regarded by the British as a policing act
Second phase of the War of Independence
December 1776-1778 American Victories start happening First in Trenton another good win was at Seritoga
Valley Forge
During the winter of 77 and 78. During the winter there is a kind of truce b/c its too cold to fight. During this time a Prussian Prince by the name of Baron Steuben comes to offer his services to General Washington. Steuben trains Washingtons army to fight and act like a proffessional army. steuben begins training in the spring and by the summer of 1778 the continental army is starting to look like a proffessional army.
third phase of the War of Independence
british decide to move fighting toward the south. this was done to stretch the american lines. this doesnt work b/c farmers down south are now recruited and they begin using guerrilla tactics against the british.
fourth phase of the War of Independence
British concentrate power and put half of forces in Virginia. the battle of yourktown is won by americans and half of the british army is captured and surrendered in north america. this ends the war.
