AUTHENTICATE
A coded challenge or a response to a coded challenge.[Challenge: "Dog 11, Hawk, AUTHENTICATE ABC" Response- "Dog 11, Z." No need to be super verbose & reply- "Dog 11, I AUTHENTICATE Z," although it is legal to do so.
AUTOCAT
Any communications relay using automatic retransmissions.
AWAKE
Land/Surface emitter activity detecting via COMINT. Opposite of ASLEEP. [See ACTIVE, DOWN, EMPTY]
(weapon) AWAY
Release/launch of specified weapon. (e.g. BIRDS AWAY, PIGS AWAY, LONG RIFLE AWAY, etc.) NOTE: Include launch location in bullseye format and weapons track direction for PIGS and LONG RIFLE.
AWOL (violation)
Informative call indicating violation of assigned procedural deconfliction measure.
AZIMUTH
1. A picture label describing 2 groups separated laterally. Group names will be referenced by cardinal directions. (e.g., NORTH GROUP-SOUTH GROUP or EAST GROUP-WEST GROUP).
2. (S/A) Direction to the threar
BANDIT
Aircraft positively identified as an enemy IAW theater identification criteria. The term doesn't necessarily imply direction or authority to engage. [See HOSTILE]
BANZAI F
Execute / executing launch and decide tactics with intent to maneuver into the visual arena. [See: SKATE, SHORT SKATE, ABORT, IN, OUT, EXIT]
BASE (+/- Number)
Reference number used to indicate such information as headings, altitude, fuels, etc.
BEAD WINDOW
Last transmission potentially disclosed unauthorized information. [If another unit calls BEAD WINDOW on you, the only response is "Hawk, ROGER, OUT." Don't argue on the radio about whether your original call was OK.]
BEAM (with direction)
Target stabilized within 70-110 degrees of aspect. [Usually given in cardinal/subcardinal directions- BEAM East or SE, vice 120]

BINGO
Fuel state needed for recovery.

BITTERSWEET
Notification of possible blue-on-blue (fratricide) or blue-on-neutral situation. [Use in DECLARE reply if Friendly or Neutral is within 5NM (or other briefed NM) of Hostiles. USAF/NATO tend to say FURBALL instead.]
BLIND F
No visual contact with friendly aircraft/ground position; opposite of VISUAL [See: NO JOY, TALLY].
BLOW THROUGH F
Continue straight ahead at the merge and not become ANCHORED with target(s). [See: BUGOUT, SEPARATE, EXTEND, ANCHORED]
BOGEY
A radar or visual air CONTACT whose identity is unknown. [See: HOSTILE, BANDIT. Usually partial ID brevity words (SPADES, OUTLAW, GOPHER, etc.) are voiced after BOGEY, if available. Note: USAF STAN is to voice BOGEY only if no partial ID words are available on the CONTACT, otherwise USAF just voices the partial ID words by themselves. (USN- 'BOGEY, SPADES, GOPHER' vs USAF- 'SPADES, GOPHER')
BOGEY DOPE F
Request for target information as requested or [if no GROUP specified] for closest group in BRAA (with appropriate fill-ins). [USAF tends to say 'BOGEY DOPE
X GROUP' vice 'BRAA X GROUP.' USN only uses BOGEY DOPE w/o GROUP names (2nd Def.)]
BOX

An established reference point from which the position of an object can be referenced by bearing (magnetic) and range (NM) from this point.

Request for confirmation of ownship position from BULLSEYE. [Same as an ALPHA CHECK. USAF term, not an offical ALSA word, included for clarity.]
BUSTER
Directive call to fly at maximum continuous speed (military power). [See: GATE, SAUNTER, LINER, CRUISE]

A fire control order used to direct units to stop tactical action against a specified target. Guided missiles already in flight will continue to intercept.
CEASE FIRE
Discontinue firing/ do not open fire. Missiles in flightare allowed to continue to intercept; Continue to track.
CHAMPAGNE
A picture label describing three distinct GROUPs with two in front and one behind. GROUP names should be NORTH LEAD GROUP and SOUTH LEAD GROUP or WEST LEAD GROUP and EAST LEAD GROUP and TRAIL GROUP. [CHAMPAGNE is X WIDE, then Y DEEP.]
CHARLIE
1.* (AIR-MAR) The expected landing time on the ship.

Administrative term used to denote Friendly aircraft. [For ID declaration purposes, always say FRIENDLY, universally understood, not CHICKS. Tanker with customers has "CHICKS in tow."]

1. No sensor information on non-friendly group of interest. [Note: CLEAN reserved for BOGEY/ BANDIT/ HOSTILE, use NEGATIVE CONTACT if no SA on FRIENDLY aircraft]

CLEAR(ED)

Two GROUPs initially separated in azimuth decreasing azimuth separation to pass each other. [CROSSING call is valid only when GROUPS are >3NM & OPENING, See: PASSING, CLOSING, OPENING]
CUTOFF (direction)
Request for, or directive to, intercept using cutoff geometry. [Fighter= "Hawk, Dog 11, CUTOFF Trail GROUP" AIC- "Dog 11, CUTOFF (or VECTOR) 070; Trail GROUP BRAA 020/25, 20K, FLANK SE, (ID)"]
CYCLOPS

DANGER CLOSE

GATE
Directive/informative call to fly as quickly as possible, using after-burner/max power. [NOTE: USAF may say BURNER vice GATE, See: BUSTER, CRUISE, SAUNTER]
GIMBAL F

HOOK
1.(w/Direction) Directive call to perform an in-place 180 degree turn.

HOSTILE
A contact positively identified as enemy upon which clearance to fire is authorized in accordance with theater rules of engagement. WARNING: The above use of HOSTILE is used as a brevity term for air-to-air engagments and should not be confused with the same term in TADIL & ROE.

Inner group formation of 2 CONTACTS separated in range.
LEADING EDGE
The groups closest to the fighters meeting labeling criteria in a multiple group formation. Used when all groups cannot be included using a traditional label or label with an additional group. [Note: 2012 ALSA deleted this term from the list, but USN still uses it]

Beam Rider (direction)
Potential Jammer along the stated axis from a ground unit or aircraft stated from the ground unit/aircraft location. Usually followed by a request to search using a n alternate radar source.
Fresh Target
Order that can be sent any time during a fire mission to indicate that a spotter requires engagement of target with a higher priority. Call for fire begins with FRESH TARGET & the ship interrupts fire on the original target to engage to the FRESH TARGET. Target location is sent as a correction from the last impacted SALVO of the original target (shift from a known point) & must include any elements of the call for fire which differs from the original target
Goalie
A back-up laser-capable platform appointed to laze the target if the primary designator's laser fails after weapon release.

New Target
Order that can be sent any time during a fire mission to indicate the spotter requires engagement to a target, not necessarily of a higher priority than the one already being engaged. Call for fire begins with NEW TARGET & the ship will continue to fire on the original target. Target location can be sent using any of the standard methods, & any elements of the new NEW TARGET which differ from the original target must be sent.
PINPOINT
(AIR-MAR) Request that the Maritime Air Controller (MAC) provide target coordinates via latitude & longitude. [Implies position sent using Bullseye not precise enough.]
Posture
Communicates sensor posture (offensive, defensive, neutral) by the JTAC to assets. Does not imply the friendly ground forces' tactical situation.

(number) Salvo
Method of fire in which a weapon or number of weapons, is fired at a target. It indicates the number of projectiles to be fired from each gun.
Slant
References number of people/objects noted at specified location (men/women/children). For example, in response to a request for SLANT on a target building: "SLANT 4/6/4."
Slew
Move sensor in direction indicated (usually accompanied by a unit of measure). For example: "SLEW left one half screen."
Smoke
Smoke marker used to mark a position.
Straddle
A spotting of STRADDLE is made for a multigun SALVO when some rounds fall short & some rounds fall beyond the target. The spotter announces STRADDLE followed by a correction to place the MPI on the target. The term is normally used during a ship adjust or massed fire mission.
Summit
The highest point of a shell's trajectory. Sent as standard during a n air observed mission & if requested by a ground spotter. Units of measure are specified. A new SUMMIT is sent if it changes by more than 300 ft for an air observer or 100 m for a ground observer.

Check Solution

Object of interest detected via airborne/ground sensor. Usually followed by amplifying information.

(RED) Prebriefed threat have not been mitigated for further mission execution. Aircraft should evaluate the their positive relative to the threat & take appropriate action.
(YELLOW) Designated assets can continue to operate relative to the prebriefed threat while other assets should continue to hold.
(GREEN) All aircraft are cleared to execute prebriefed missions. [Normally a response to strategic SAM (SA-5/10/20/etc.) status, passed prior to start of a Vul Time.]

ENGAGEMENT COMPLETE
Mandatory call from attack aircraft to JTAC/FAC during Type 3 CAS terminal control, indicating completion of ordnance release. See also CLEARED TO ENGAGE.
Hounddog
Call made by fighter indicating fighter is in a position to employ weapons. Used in response to COVER.
