Many people may not know that Air Defense Artillery lineage comes from Coastal Artillery Corps. It was created after the revolutionary war in order to protect the United States coasts against naval attacks and bombardments by ships. Air Defense Artillery has come a long way and has had to continuously evolve in order to protect the US from adversaries and danger. From the Multiple Gun Motor Carriage M-16 Halftrack to Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, the mission has always been to protect the United States at all cost. Even though the Air Defense Artillery is very different then when it started as Coastal Artillery, the Concept remains the same. Coast Artillery Corps was established in 1901 from a division of the US Army Artillery. …show more content…
The HAWK surface to air missile system was deployed in the same time frame as the T141 “Duster,” which assisted in covering the low altitude engagements that the HAWK was less capable of performing. These systems were focused mainly along the European theater to counter the formidable Red Army Air Force, however, several units “Dusters” were deployed to the Republic of South Vietnam and inevitably found themselves supporting ground forces again as they had in Korea. By the end of the Vietnam conflict, the US was well on its way to streamlining its Air Defense systems and introduce more mobile Air Defense platforms in the form of the M163 Vulcan and M68 Chaparral air defense systems. It was towards the end of the Vietnam conflict in the mid 1970’s that the US began developing what was to become what we know as modern air defense weapon systems and further showcasing the ever evolving nature of air defense weapons systems. By the late 1970’s and early 1980’s the modern era of Air Defense Artillery technologies began to emerge. During this time the Army began to field the Avenger and Patriot weapon systems. The counter rocket, artillery and mortar (C-RAM) are used in Iraq and Afghanistan bases to counter indirect fire attacks. Meanwhile, in Europe and the Pacific, soldiers of the ADA that utilize the Patriot system, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and the Avenger system, are to defend any attack by missiles or air that threatens the safety of deployed soldiers and allied (Air Defense Artillery - Committed to the Force, and the Fight the Future, nd). In Alaska and California, the Army National Guard ADA units operate long-range ground-based interceptors in the event of any possible air or terrorist attack against the United States. The system of air defense and missile ADA is currently integrated into a network of defense forces known as Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD). The BMD system is being used as a measure of internationally integration of air and missile defense forces from allied and friendly nations.
