According to my personal experiences and past conversations I’ve come across many moments that make me agree with Tannen and her ideas. One, for example, was when person A told person B “ I am going on a hike” , Person B says “ wow ok thanks for inviting me “. This causes an argument between both people because person A simply said he was going on a hike person B assumes she was not invited because person A used the phrase “I”. Person B thinks that there is a metamessage in the conversation when she simply could’ve just asked to come along. This can create an argument because the two speakers aren't operating on the same level of talk as Tannen points out, one speaker was making more of a statement but also making the invitation for the other…

Later on, they started to argue easily. Even the small thing such as which restaurant or which store they should go, as long as they have different opinions then the argument would start. At that time, I understood for them that they had so much stress in life.…

The fine-tuning argument for God’s existence is a version of the teleological argument. This argument states that there is a need of an explanation for why the universe is the way it is. The argument claims that the way the universe is confirms the theory that there is an intelligent creator/being otherwise known as God. The reason so is because that intelligent creator/being created the universe with purpose of their being life and that life being supported. This then brings up the question what about the universe needs an explanation?…

Cleanthes' argument from design for God's existence is not convincing. He compares two different ideas and thus, wrongly generalizes. He also commits a fallacy, and doesn’t meet the criteria necessary for the type of argument he offers. Although, a few potential strong points are present in his beliefs, like the improbability of chance, and the incomprehensible evidence of God, they are still not strong enough for His justification. Cleanthes through an a posteriori, inductive argument claims that since the presence of small machines (i.e. houses) implies human design, the presence of an even bigger machine (i.e. the universe) implies a human-like intelligence behind it as well as "the adapting of means to ends in natural and human machines…

The first step towards an ethical and virtuous life for Zhu Xi is by consciously making the choice to follow the Way. He acknowledges that the Way can be taught to anyone, but it can only be fully embraced by those who choose it. Gardner mentions “that is, for Zhu, although the proper path is clear and traversable, man must want to take it; he must actively decide to pursue it” (130). Once one has accepted the right path, one can begin the process of learning, which Zhu Xi emphasizes greatly in his commentary. “Only by learning can they realize the Way and become superior men” (Gardner 130).…

Cassidy, Great job explaining why gun control would not be efficient to U.S. citizens. There were a lot of great points raised, for example, the fact that guns are not the only weapons which produce deadly results. The self-protection argument proclaims that criminals are less likely to target private citizens who are able to carry concealed weapons or those who have weapons in their homes (Alvarez & Bachman, 2014, p. 57), which are perfect examples of the impact guns have on citizens who feel the need for protection. If criminals were to burglarize a home, they definitely would avoid the homes in which they suspect the owners are bearing arms. I agree that gun laws are created in effort to protect citizens, however they ultimately produce…
