Receiver
They are the targets for the sender's message(s). The more supervisor's know about their subordinates, the more effective communication will be.
Sender
Needs to select and arrange symbols, words, gestures properly to ensure that it's received correctly in the receiver's mind. How the sender encodes the message can have a pos or neg affect on communication process.
Message
Idea, feeling or info that the sender transfers to the audience.

Feedback
A reaction to the received message. Completes the communication process and perpetuates further exchange of dialogue.

Two basic types:


Organizational - relate to work situations or environment (environmental noise, weak communication policies/norms, autocratic mgmt [leader makes decision alone, staff works within resulting conditions. Leader does not listen to or have a receptive attitude towards subordinate's input/suggestions]).


Psychological - relate to the way people think, reason or feel.

What are the elements of the communication process?

Sender, message, receiver, feedback.
What is paralanguage?
The way we "say" things. Tone, dictation, rate, rhythm, quality, volume, fluency.
What are the four types of unpleasant voice qualities?
Hypernasality, denasality, hoarseness, huskiness.
Sentence Clarity

Avoid too many items being combined in a single sentence - don't mix up modifiers, numbers (single/plural), perspectives (1st, 2nd,etc.) or times (past, present...).

Introduction (is a main component of preparing and delivering the message)
Contains: Attention step, purpose statement, motivation/hook, and overview. Provides a roadmap so audience knows where you are headed. Notation: Let your audience know who you are!!
Body (is a main component of preparing and delivering the message)
Where you deliver your message and achieve your objective (of motivating, informing, persuading, etc.). Is made up of an orderly sequence of main ideas. Leads off with a topic sentence. Should systematically guide your audience using a logical pattern. Contains support material, personal, standard and common knowledge, statistics, comparisons, explanations/definitions, etc.
Conclusion (the last element of effective communication)
A good conclusion lets the audience know where you’ve been, how they can benefit, and thatthe communication is over. Contains a summary, restatement of purpose and/or re-motivation and closure.
What are the two types of explanations? (Relevant to the body being on of the three main elements of good communication)

Analysis - break into small parts providing the 5 w's.


Description - similar to definition but adds more adjectives or adverbs. Allows audience to see, hear or feel the expanded definition.

What does it mean to synthesize when evaluating a source?
To put different elements together to form a new whole, draw conclusions about the relationships and implications.

"Because test."

What is the "because" test?
Place the word "because" at the end of each supporting sentence or discussion point to see if it supports the topic sentence. You can evaluate your topic sentence by placing Because at the end to see if it supports your purpose.
Where do topic sentences belong for the purposes of the ALS volumes? What is the purpose of a topic sentence?

They should always be the first line of the paragraph in the body of your communication projects. Standardizes grading.


Purpose: to introduce the main idea (theme) by summarizing the purpose. Provides focus, answers the why, how or when of purpose statement.

What do Internal Transitions help to do?

Ties ideas and sentences together, helping to ensure that the communication is coherent.


i.e.: and, but, nor, for... and/or moreover, nonetheless, therefore, hence, etc.



What are external transitions, what do they help to do?
Provide links between main points within a communication. Helps audience to know where you've been, where you are headed - allows them to shift gears.
What are the 2 requirements for source support in written projects?

Integration: Including the citation directly in the text... i.e. "Dr. Green said that..."




Citation: Endnotes (most common in PME docs).

What are the two requirements for source support in spoken projects?

Integration: Lets the audience know where you obtained your info from...




Qualification: Telling the audience about sources background, i.e. "Dr. Green, a heart specialist at..."





Re-motivation (part of conclusion portion of the elements of effective communication)
If your purpose was to inform recap what the audience should remember or how they should use the info. If purpose was to persuade, recap what you want them to do AND restate your position/appeal to the audience.
