The 8 extraordinary Vessels are considered to be the ________ channels of acupuncture
deepest
The 8 extraordinary are thought of as reservoirs of qi. Also a sponge where qi can be absorbed or released.
Using the metaphor of the channels working like rivers, the Eight Extraordinary are like reservoirs or lakes of Qi. When there is excess qi in the 12 channel system the overflow goes into the Eight Extraordinary. When the 12 channel system is deficient, energy can be drawn from the Eight Extraordinary.
This explanation goes to the heart of many of the point functions we have seen already. For example Kd-6 is able to call upon this extra Qi to nourish yin and cool heat within the body. P6 is used to calm the heart by calling on this reserve of Qi.
This one concept goes a long way into clarifying many of the TCM uses of the Eight Extraordinary.
The 8 extraordinary are used (2 ways)
1. As a completely separate system with separate diagnosis and treatment principles
2. Within the standard 12 channel system of TCM as a complementary treatment
General concepts of the 8 extraordinary :
NO organ association
NO element association
NO internal/external pairing

No yuan source, front mu, or element points
Some channels have a xi-cleft point, some have a luo, and some have none.

Each channel has a MASTER and a COUPLED point that are used to treat the specific channel.

These Master Points are not always located on the channel
Points on the 8 extraordinary are unlike the 12 regular channels...
There is not a system of points like the regular channels.
There are points associated with the channel pathway, although they are not often needled.

EXCEPT FOR the REN and DU, which act more like the 12 regular and have points that are needled.

Below medial side of heel
Moves up medial side of leg
Moves thru abdomen and chest
Moves thru the throat
Moves up the face and to UB 1
Enters Brain

Chong Mai pathway
Starts internally in lower abdomen (uterus in women)
Moves out thru Ren 1
One branch moves up spine
One branch moves up tot ST 30 and in KD channel
Moves thru chest, neck, face, and below eye
(Another branch moves down the medial leg)
Chong Mai Master Point
SP 4
Ren Mai Master Point
Lung 7
Du Mai Master Point
SI 3
Ren channel pathway
1. Starts below Ren 3! This are is the uterus for women and lower abdomen in men
2. Descends to Ren 1
3. From Ren 1 it splits into 2 branches. One branch moves up the spine into the neck
4. the primary branch moves up the anterior side of the body
5. when the channel reaches the mouth it meets DU 28 and moves up to the eyes
Practical sense of what the ren mai treats: (when using the channel points on their own)
Front Mu points located on the channel
There are six MU points on the Ren Channel: UB, SI, SJ, ST, Ht, P

Strengthening the deepest energies of the body (Dantain)
Ren 4 & 6 tonfiy the core energy

Rebellion of various sorts
Many of the points descend energy from the stomach, spleen, lungs.

Issues of the spirit
Ren 14, 15, and 17 have strong calming the spirit indications.
Ren 1
Meeting of Ren, Chong, Du mai

Actions:
Regulates the anterior and posterior yin
Drains Damp Heat (out of genitals)
Calms the Spirit
Promotes resuscitation
*CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy

Pulls energy down to base core body (kind of like KD 1)
Erectile Dysfunction
cycle issues
2ndary for reproduction
injuries or ED in genitals
pairing w/ LV 5 good for menstural
Ren 3
Front Mu of the Urinary Bladder (helps bl do bl things)
(intersection point of the ren, spleen, liver, kidney)
Warning: DO NOT NEEDLE IF PT'S BLADDER IS FULL

Actions:
Benefit bladder
Drains Dampness, treats leucorrhea
Benefits the uterus and regulates menstruation, usually stagnations
fortifies the kidneys
Ren 4
Front Mu of the Small Intestine (intersection pt. of ren, spleen, liver, kidney)
Warning: DO NOT NEEDLE if pt's bladder is full

Actions:
Fortifies source qi, benefits essence
tonifies and nourishes the kidneys
warms and fortifies the spleen
benefits the uterus, assists conception
regulates the lower jiao, benefits the urinary bladder
restores collapse

"According to classical Chinese thought, the lower dantian, located in the lower abdomen and extending from Ren 7 to Ren 4, is the residence of the deepest energies of the body and the source of all movement."

More Yin.
Tonifies core energy here
Ren 5
Front Mu of the SJ

Actions:
Moves and benefits water passages--helps move things thru 3 jiao/buildups/edema/urinary retention/incontinence
Regulates the uterus
Used a little less
Ren 6
No category/Very Important Point

Actions:
Fosters Source Qi
Tonifies Qi
Tonifies the Kidneys and fortifies Yang
Rescues Yang Collapse
Regulates the Qi, harmonizes the Blood
“Reflects the vital center of the body where the deepest energies are stored and generated, and which plays a pivotal role in he treatment of disease and in Chinese martial arts and qigong practices.”
“The dynamic Qi that moves between the kidneys is the basis of human life, the source of the five zang, six fu, the root of the 12 channels, the door of respiration, and the origin of the san jiao”.

More yang (than 4)--good to use together
big digestion pt.
more chronic

Intersection point of ren, chong, and kidney
Ren 8
Warning: NO DIRECT NEEDLING!
Moxa only

Actions:
Warms Yang
Rescues yang collapse
warms and harmonizes the intestines
Ren 9
Actions:
Regulates water passages--water move & Ren 5 lower jiao
