Summary of Storyline
“The Internship”, is a movie about two men, Billy McMahon (played by Vince Vaugh) and Nick Campbell (played by Owen Wilson) and their experience as interns at Google. Both Billy and Nick were former wrist watch salesmen until their company had gone out of business. ‘The Internship’, proves that conflict within a team is inevitable. The first conflict situation in the movie is when the team is faced with a debugging challenge. Due to their lack of technical knowledge, Billy and Nick are suggesting many ways to solve their problem, however it lacks the substance needed to solve the actual problem and the team begins to shout at each other. Yo-Yo, Neha, and Stuart decide to send Billy and Nick away to find a professor who is bald, in a wheelchair and has a British accent at Stanford that might be able to help them solve the debugging challenge. Naturally, the young interns have made up this up in order to send Billy and Nick away while they solve the problem. In this example the conflict within the team isn’t solved in a proper mature manner, which is why conflict management skills is imperative in a team. According to (Russell , Akerman, Topper, & Oliveira, 2014), “conflict is inevitable due to the complexity of human relations and the pressures under which modern society puts us”. Conflict in a team arises from namely three situations. The first being ‘role overload’, which define as “when one member of the team (often willingly) takes on more than he/she can cope with”.
