The Internship (2013) is a comedy directed by Shawn Levy and stars Vince Vaughen, Billy McMahon, and Owen Wilson, Nick Campbell, as two wristwatch salesmen who just lost their jobs due to the digital age. Both characters now face financial crisis that affects their personal lives too. With a lack of skills and a mature age, they talk themselves into an internship at Google. The elephant in the room that happens to be their age, only increases once they arrive at the Google Headquarters – as they surprisingly got the internship. It should be noted that the movie took place at the actual Google Headquarters in California. As assigned, they have to compete in teams and the winning team will be guaranteed jobs with Google. In every scene, it is evident that he takes full charge of the situation yet it is all in an autocratic manner and he does not let anyone offer their opinion. He only focuses on winning and does not care for ethical behavior – this is seen in the ‘Quidditch Cup’ task, when he injures his team mate so that they can win. During this scene, Billy offers the opposite and serves to be an incredible leader. At first, his team is failing and so at half time, he prompts them and encourages them. Together, they plan and take control of the situation and their actions hereafter are proof that good management and leadership leads to success. Billy shows both management and leadership skills through motivating, delegating, planning, leading and controlling.

Another key leader throughout the movie is the character Lyle, who serves to be the group’s manager – which he does a good job of. When introduced to the group, he radiates positivity and encourages his team mates to do the same. Before the ‘customer-care’ task, he preps the team with a motivational speech as well as tests their knowledge in a way that is not intimidating or

Problems are definite and a business needs to come up with new and different ways to tackle issues. This is a huge component for Google and is evident in the movie. The actual Google Headquarters is filled with creative thinking interior. Slides, sleeping-pods, free food, bicycles and the list goes on are all ways that encourage different thinking.

Google also uses ‘different’ ways of testing the groups with their original and well thought-of tasks. The ‘Quidditch Cup’ is an example of this as well as the Ping-Pong bats used when giving rules about Google. The ‘Quidditch Cup’ does not test your physical, athletic skills but rather your use of teamwork capabilities and your use of management and leadership. By using the Ping-Pong bats to answer yes or no (the green or red side) unconsciously allows the interns to remember better. Google makes nothing boring which encourages focus and concentration.

Billy and Nick use their creative thinking when faced with the ultimate last task, which decides whether or not they will be hired. They do this by using their sales rep skills and convincing a pizza owner to develop into a franchise. They were simply asked to just find businesses that will ‘join’ Google and the two of them found a way to get a business to join and expand so that all stores will be with Google – offering major

The leading of a team or group is not a simple task but involves real life skills that take time, thinking and commitment. The role of leadership is an essential aspect of an organization since it can determine the difference between success and failure. “Although leaders are gifted in different ways, with different personalities and varying skill sets, all leaders can grow, become more skillful, and become more competent so that they can achieve greater effectiveness” (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014, pp. 10). At times, leadership may seem overwhelming and complicated, but by concentrating on specific fundamentals they will find that they can guide the team with the assurance and competence. There no one style of leadership, in fact, there are several…

By giving their APMs seemingly mundane and menial tasks in unfamiliar environments, and adding the incentive of a prize for the highest performing employee, these managers are forced to become not only more aware of their surroundings, but their own actions and responses as well. In order to succeed, they need to process these observations and experiences while seeking to be understood and use them to develop an action plan in order to complete the task. The more success they have with the first learning strategy, the better toolset they have to work within the second, leading to a higher likelihood of winning the incentive. Going back to what Levy has mentioned about the entrepreneurial experience and mindset of those selected for the program, another reason why this program has been so successful for Google is that these entrepreneurial-minded employees will internalize these experiences and then translate them into new product developments aimed at providing solutions or filling market demands in these formerly foreign environments. Would Google 's approach work better at some type of organizations than…

On the other hand, however, others argue that Google is more beneficial to education. In the words of Roger Nevin, one of this view’s main proponents, “Google Apps has significantly improved the way students and teachers work” (Nevin 46).…

In every good film, there is an introduction, a rising action, a climax, a falling action, and a conclusion. These are basic staples when it comes to writing and creating a film. But when it comes to the characters in a film, there are some other staples as well. One of these such staples is that there needs to be a solid leader in the film, one who can keep the story moving or put the main character back on track. In Lee Daniel’s “The Butler”, however, we see multiple leaders over the course of the movie, all showing different tactics of leadership that are stated in Barry Posner and James Kouzes’ book “The Leadership Challenge”.…
