In a child’s early years, they are growing and developing in many different ways, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. There are six developmental domains: physical, motor, perceptual, cognitive, speech and language, and social-emotional. Development in one domain influences, and is influenced by development in other domains. Physical development and growth are very important in a child’s life. In their first few years they are growing and developing in many ways. However, not every child grows and develops at the same pace. It is very important that parents, teachers, and other caregivers understand this concept. It is the adults responsibility to not push the child too much to achieve the goal they are trying to reach. …show more content…
Perceptual development is very closely linked to motor development. Some aspects of perception are hard wired into children so it takes no effort at all to learn it, where as some have to be developed. An example of this would be a newborn babies vision. When babies are first born their vison is not very good, however just a few weeks after birth, they can start defining shapes and objects. Perceptual development involves three important functions: Multisensory, Habituation, and Sensory Integration. Multisensory is information that is generally received through more than one sensory system at a time. Habituation is a term that refers to a person’s ability to concentrate on a specific task while ignoring everything else. Sensory integration is a process that involves translation sensory information into functional behavior. Cognitive development addresses the expansion of a child’s intellect or mental abilities. It is an on going process of interaction between the child and his perceptual view of objects or events. They learn through structured and unstructured activities such as games and having interactions with others. Cognitive and perceptual development cannot proceed independently on each other.
