How do simple inorganic binary and polyatomic compounds derive their name? Well the cation metal is always named first with its name unchanged. The anion nonmetal is written after the cation to change the end in -ide. You're probably wondering what inorganic and organic compound are. An inorganic compound is any compound that is not organic while an organic compound is any member of large gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon. A polyatomic ion compound are made up of two or more atoms bonded together and a metal. A binary compound is a chemical compound that contains exactly two different elements. These two differ because polyatomic are made up of two or more atoms while binary compounds contain exactly …show more content…
We need a systematic method for naming compounds because there are infinite potential chemical compounds that can be made something just by adding removing or substituting an atom. The rules for naming ionic, covalent, and acid compounds all differ because ionic compounds first name the cation then the anion while the covalent compounds second element is written with an -ide ending and finally acid compounds first syllable of anion has the suffix "-ic". We use the greek prefixes such as "di-" and "tri-" when the number of atoms in an element. A monatomic ion consists of a single atom. If that ion consists of more than one atom even if it's the same element its called a polyatomic ion. Oxyanion on the other hand is an anion containing one or more oxygen atoms bonding to another element such as sulfate and carbonate ions. The importance of parentheses when used in chemical equations indicates that there are a certain number of atoms in a compound. An acis is a substance that gives off hydrogen ions in a aqueous solution while a base gives off -OH ions. There are only a few strong acid and bases most are weak meaning they produce few hydrogen ions in aqueous
