Conflict has been around since the start of human history. From primitive man, to the Christian Crusades of Jerusalem, and even today’s Global War on Terror, there have been major disputes between different parties. This drives a figurative wedge between our fellow man, and ultimately provides a purpose for the United States Army. Even though conflict is the basis on which our service was founded, we can not afford to have fighting within the ranks. It degrades the Army, and, as leaders, Non-Commissioned Officers must have the tools to manage conflict.
Firstly, a team leader must be able to resolve conflict while remaining fair. Fairness is characterized by behavior that does not discriminate or produce favoritism. Logic and fairness are important when handling conflict, but the speed at which they are applied set the team’s tone. When a team leader has the authority to resolve issues quickly, it shows his or her subordinates how competent their superior is. This, in turn, gives the Sergeant’s confidence, but what about when they experience an internal struggle? A lack of focus for the mission can occur and that brings down the team.
