Gun control is one of many contemporary social problems that has created a lot of controversy and disagreement between a variety of groups in the United States. Underlying this issue as well as others is the Conflict Theory, one of the few traditions highlighted by Randall Collins in his book, Four Sociological Traditions.
Disagreements can arise from individual beliefs that end up opposing one another, and once these conflicts reach their tipping point, one side become alienated, and change begins to be fought for. Each president has put their priorities in different places, sometimes with the influences of certain groups supporting from behind. As mentioned before, the National Rifle Association is a group that has been funding the president. In her speech, Emma Gonzalez mentions how she knows that the president has received $30 million dollars from the NRA (2018). The politics here are clear: there are two sides, one side is the moral side, asking for change in order to benefit and protect anyone in the future from getting seriously hurt and to prevent a shooting from happening again. People protest after the fact to reiterate the need for change. They want to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Rallies and protests happen every time, pleading for lawmakers to pass laws, to stop random people from buying guns and stop them from potentially causing harm. But because of politics, no change occurs. It is definitely easier said than done when thinking about what laws could be passed. We put our dependence on people we elect into government to carry out our thoughts and needs, for the best of our country, which makes it all the more sad that it makes sense for the President to want to continue a relationship with the NRA even if people call for him to pass gun reform laws: lots of money is involved. It’s the game of politics. And unfortunately, it seems like the President seems to take the latter route. By this, he is putting the importance of guns before the importance of children, before people, before the citizens of the country he in charge
