Evelina Podolskiy Mrs. Ritter Frizell English I Tracey Thurman’s Affect on Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse has been an issue throughout history but when it came to Tracey Thurman getting stabbed several times it finally caught the attention of people. On June 10th, 1983 in Connecticut, Tracey’s husband Charles Buck Thurman used a knife not only to split open her cheek, stab her 13 times but also break her neck by kicking her in the head. While all of this was happening, there were over 40 witnesses as well as police watching Buck kick Tracey and not arrest him. After finally getting Tracey to an ambulance, Buck once again tries to make yet another attack on her and only then do police finally arrest him, causing them to look into this case. The

Scared and worried about what he would do, Tracey called the police, Buck hearing this reached into his back pocket and pulled out a knife. He stabs her in the face, pushes her to the ground, stomps on her face, and breaks her neck. This was in front of many witnesses for 27 minutes straight. Donna R. Gorre states, “When she asked the police to arrest him for violating his probation and threatening her life, they ignored her yet again.” After the incident, Tracy's sister Sharal reached out to an attorney to help them file a lawsuit which later led to The Repose Act, also known as the Thurman Law. This lawsuit talked about how police treated domestic violence cases unequally to other offenses, which breaks the protection clause of the 14th Amendment. ( "nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.") The police were unsuccessful in protecting Tracey Thurman and ignoring her past claims about Buck, which resulted in risking her chances of living a healthy life. The Family Violence Protection Act has helped protect those who were affected by domestic abuse, including children, as well as providing emergency shelters, hotlines, and counseling all over America since 1984 (NNEDV). This ensured the safety of all victims and their future, providing them with many resources to help them as best as possible in whatever situation they were in. Tracey Thurman completely changed the view of domestic abuse and the way laws effectively review domestic and family abuse reports to protect victims of abuse. Domestic abuse laws were not always around, but violence was, the issue was getting the law to realize it was a bigger problem than they made it out to be. Tracey's case undoubtedly changed the law enforcement approach to domestic abuse and the way it was taken care of, by now equally prioritizing abusive reports in comparison to any other case. Moreover, the Repose Act and Family Violence Act were then created which helped so many victims and gave them the resources they needed to keep them safe and ensure their comfort while also helping them cope with any trauma
