Can you truly be happy living in a false reality? Tom King, the writer of the newest issue of Mr. Miracle and The Vision explores each superhero's past and how they choose to react and eventually deal with them. Tom King’s comics give us insight into how we as humans can deal with our own struggles. In Jack Kirby’s Mr. Miracle, a baby born of HighFather, the ruler of New Genesis, was raised on the torturous hellscape of Apokilips, ruled by Darkseid. Scott Free has never been able to escape his darkness, which comes in the form of trauma. When Vision is on his way to kill Victor Mancha, he is stopped by the Scarlet Witch who tells Vision if he does this, he’d just be like everyone else. “Vision issue 11 Vision, “I’m sorry, Wanda. I do not think you understand. That you never understood. I want to be like everyone else.” Vision ignores Wanda’s plea and still tries to go through with his mission of killing Victor. Vision's relationship with Virginia also doesn’t alter his philosophies or perspectives. At the end of Issue 12, Vision is seen recreating his dead wife, showing he hasn’t learned anything from Virginia’s sacrifice. Unlike Vision’s unwavering beliefs, Scott’s beliefs are remodeled as a result of his relationships. Scott is changed due to he and Barda’s relationship. Barda issue 11, “So you’re all $%&@# up. And I’m still with you. So that makes me all #$&@# up.” “And you want to give that to our kid!” “What is wrong with you?”Barda’s point is that by giving up Jacob they’d continue the cycle of intergenerational trauma, and Scott wouldn’t be able to recover from his depression. When Scott and Barda are fighting in the park, Barda Barda Issue 11 “We are it. And he isn’t.” This makes Scott realize that despite “getting through trauma” they still experienced it, which they can never impart on Jacob. In the final issue after defeating Darkseid, Scott proves he’s overcome his trauma by placing the Mirror of Goodness, a symbol of his true nature, in his bathroom. Barda helps Scott overcome his trauma by helping him see his son’s importance. Despite Virginia being a pivotal character in following your own destiny, Vision didn’t fit that description.
