The author of the book, The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple, is Jeff Guinn. Jeff Guinn is an author that has written multiple nonfiction and fiction books on multiple different topics. This book, The Road to Jonestown, is about the events leading up to and the events of one of the largest mass deaths in American history. This book focuses on Jim Jones and a cult known as the People’s Temple and how this cult committed the largest murder-suicide in American history. This took place in Jonestown, but the book highlights the events leading up to it in Indiana and California. Jeff Guinn wrote this to educate readers and anyone that wished to learn about the events at Jonestown and events leading up to it with newly released documents and interviews from survivors. The author states on page 137, “Even a general reputation for which almost any political or social stance warranted a handwritten letter, in which the recipient was first praised, then informed that Peoples Temple and its pastor were of like mind: [what follows is a handwritten letter].” This short clip of the story comes from the Peoples Temple writing letters to school board members, county lawmen, and political figures to anyone of significance, praising them and promoting the Peoples Temple itself. This quote from the story allows the reader to understand what the Peoples Temple was like in relation to those around them and how they influenced others to join the Peoples Temple. In this quote, the reader can determine that the reader did not come up with the story on his own, but rather he got his information from primary and secondary sources throughout the story. Guinn can give some bias throughout the story because it is written through the eyes of people who experienced the event themselves and
