Myth uses the medium of a story to describe the activities of the gods and larger than life humans, emphasising interpersonal relationships. These stories were neither singular nor static but evolved with different versions and were manipulated to highlight different values and ideologies. I agree with the statement and will argue that the myths of Hippolytus and the foundation myths of Roman were used by ancient societies to bind its members into a cohesive unit. This essay will explore the ways in which myth were used to bring members of an ancient society together by instigating and reinforcing civic identity and pride. Explore how the role of myths defined and unified the elite.…
Although it is impossible to identify an exact time period that dance evolved, it is estimated that it was approximately 9000 years ago; at around 6000BC, as shown from the Bhimbetka rock shelters throughout India. The paintings depicted tribe members celebrating after a successful hunt. That was later followed with other cave drawings throughout the Western World such as in countries as Spain and France. Modern Indian dance was actually based on a very early manuscript, 'The Natya Shastra', which was written between 200BCE and 200BE.There is also evidence from Egyptian tomb paintings at about 3300 BC which evidently features dancing figures. This in time would heavily influence Greek dance.…

Firstly, in order to gain a clear understanding of what the Athenian Assembly would have been like, it is important to look at who would attend the assemblies, as obviously, one would not be able to propose a motion without first gaining to right to attend. From reading speeches by Demosthenes, we can see that there was a process you had to go through in order to gain permission to attend. As part of his speech Against Leochares, Demosthenes comments that ‘he had the audacity to go and enrol himself on the assembly list. ’ This is evidence of there being a list of specific people who were allowed to attend and partake in the assembly. Aristotle goes into much more detail, telling of the process of gaining access to the assembly.…
In her essay, “On Compassion”, Barbara Ascher uses ethos and references to Greek tragedy to demonstrate the purpose of her essay; that compassion can be learned by witnessing the adversity or poverty around you, and that we should not ignore the helpless, because they remind us of our own selves. Ascher also uses examples of current events related to the homeless to emphasize her perspective on compassion. She believes that compassion is something that is learned, not a character trait. Ascher uses pathos to convey the purpose of her essay. Ascher suggested that living in a big city like Manhattan allows you to see more poverty and homelessness than places like Wyoming, and that even though a lot of people in the city want to escape that, those conditions allow them to start to empathize with the homeless.…
The main purpose of Socratess talk is to discover the truth and to argue about the way of human life. This can be seen by the words "And if I am to carry on the enquiry by myself, I will first of all remark that not only I but all of us should have an ambition to know what is true and what is false in this matter, for the discovery of the truth is a common good. "(Page 104) and "for you will observe that we are arguing about the way of human life"(Page 99). In the last speech of Socrates, he said, "I desire only to know the truth, and to live as well as I can, and, when I die, to die as well as I can. And, to the utmost of my power, I exhort all other men to do the same"(Page 121).…
Plays began to become important in ancient Greece and two types of plays which were written and performed were comedies and tragedies. A comedy, in ancient Greece, was usually a play that marked or made fun of a certain topic, person, or group of people. One famous comedy writer was Aristophanes. He wrote the plays The Birds and Lysistrata. A tragedy, in ancient Greece, usually dealt with a moral or social issue, human suffering, and almost always ended in disaster.…
The modern drama, A View from the Bridge, written by Arthur Miller, is told from Alfieri’s perspective. Since the beginning of the first scene, he is established as the narrator for the story. In this essay, I will be analyzing the role of Alfieri in the play through a careful analysis of Miller’s stage directions for Alfieri’s character and his cryptic speeches in between the scenes. Fate and/or predestination is a predominant theme in A View from the Bridge, and Miller uses Alfieri’s character to depict this theme by morphing his character into a solitary Greek chorus. The role of traditional Greek choruses in Greek tragedies include commenting on the characters’ actions and thoughts from an outsider’s perspective without any biases clouding their judgement, guiding the characters’ choices as they moved through the scenes, but mainly to predict the character’s fate, destiny, and/or demise to the audience throughout the play.…
He claims to favour the interests of the city over all but then shows his true colours by both acting and ranting like a tyrant. Antigone is steadfast and determined in her aim - she fully believes that the rule of god must take precedence in this matter regarding death, as well as revealing her belief that it is the family that is more important than the state. In contrast, it is Oedipus’ desire to serve his adopted city, and to release it from its’ suffering, that propels him toward the awful truth about his family. Oedipus ends up losing both his true and adoptive parents, his wife, sight, and ultimately his people. Oedipus seems a more intensely tragic figure, especially when compared to Antigone, who is fully aware of what she is doing.…

It is my belief that even though very similar, Ancient Greece has a broader and more vivid culture than modern day Greece. Ancient Greece has many great achievements in government, science, philosophy, and the arts that all still influence us today. Religion over the years in Greece has changed. Ancient Greece’s religion was very accustom to their daily life. People in Ancient Greece were very religious.…
