When thinking of poverty, many people first think of third world countries like Africa. What many people do not know is the amount of people living in the United States in poverty, especially children, with the most recent count being at over sixteen million children. With the federal poverty line is set at $23,550 a year for a family of four, makes twenty-two percent of all children living in the United States in poverty (“Child Poverty”). Understanding there is a large population of people living in poverty in the United States comes with many discrepancies in living situations. The communities that these people live in differ vastly than those who are well off financially. Because these communities function differently, this population has more susceptibility to larger issues; one major problem is obesity. Two major contributors to this problem are poor nutrition, with the lack of nutritious options in the community and the large quantity of fast food restaurants, and the lack of activity, due to lack of parenteral supervision and lack of opportunities. To tackle this problem, the “Let’s Move” campaign aids families, schools and communities with opportunities to better the situations of people in this type of environment. Though it takes on these problems, there is another aspect that needs to be considered as well, screen time.
