Book Report: The Other End of the Stethoscope The purpose of this book is to reveal why medical professionals do what they do. The importance of the job in the medical field isn’t only based on the work that is done physically to help the patient, but also how the nurses help them mentally. In the book it is shown that the tools of caring, communication and understanding can make all the difference in the world for a patient. The words of Engel give health care providers an outlook on how to claim a connection between the patient and the caregiver. The simple procedure of the nurses that Marcus had just by being there for him shows compassion that is so important to him when he felt like no one else was. A nurse named Jennifer, a paramedic who was the first medical personnel to interact after admission, is mentioned by Engel of when he knew nothing of what was going on or what had happened to him that she was by his side. Jennifer's simple words of, “I’m here” when all Marcus could do was squeeze her hand in response was a feeling of not being alone in the midst of the chaos. This act of the nurse was impactful on Marcus’s feelings at the time of uncertainty. Another nurse that was certainly impactful in Marcus’ patient care was Barb Dewalle. After the initial release, he was attending the hospital two or three times per week for appointments. After the last appointment with Dr. Don Gay, Marcus was officially released to be able to eat solid foods and return to college. Engels walking papers were signed after a long year of being held from eating solid food. The story of Marcus Engel has and will continue to impact medical professionals and even patients from here on out. At the end, Marcus realized that a traumatic experience at the hospital can become a blessing at the end, learning so many new things about the quality of life and the compassion of his nurses. He thanked the health care providers for what they did in his life, physically and mentally. The doctors and nurses assigned to Marcus, good or bad, were vital in the care that was done for him to be where he is today. The experiences of Engel are important for nurses to hear about so they know the impact they have on their patients.
