Life among the rich and famous seems glamorous until it backfires and has one hopeful to return to the simple life that was once granted. The Rolling Stones said it best in one of their hits “.You can 't always get what you want but if you try sometime you find you get what you need.” Occasionally, having what you need is not good enough for shallow people. They need material things to fulfill a void in their life. They fill the gap with expensive items that provide a false since of happiness. It is the precieved power of the objects that can bring joy to their lives. In the short story of “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, he tells a tale of women, known as Madame Loisel who is unhappy with her life as she feels that the life she lives is not good enough for her. She feels as if she was born into a life of scarcity and she wants an extravagant lifestyle. The luxuries she desires are not affordable by her or her husband. She focuses on the materialistic items that she desires and that is all that matters to her. The author uses irony and the symbol of a necklace to reveal the misery that greed and deceptiveness can cause in one’s life. Since Madame Loisel is an egotistical, woman the story exposes her unhappiness with her life because she is not content with her currant prominence.
