The Handmaid’s Tale The Handmaid’s Tale is a book about a man dominated old testament inspired theocratic military government, called Gilead. In Gilead there is a hierarchy of women and the women are categorized to do different roles, the different categories are the wives, aunts, econowives, marthas, handmaids, and the unwomen. The handmaid's wear red colored clothing and are only used to produce children for the wives who can’t produce children, they have strict guidelines and very little freedom, such as our main character Offred. Offred is our protagonist who got her name from the commander who is trying to have a child, they receive this name by placing “Of” in the front of the commander’s name, Of-fred. This forms a tighter bond between the two using language and using it in a forbidden manner. In other cases where Ofglen said “You can join us’ she says. Us? I say. There is an un then there’s a we. I knew it.” (Atwood 168-169) This sharing of knowledge is also a sharing of power that is forbidden because you become a threat to the totalitarian government which rules all of Gilead. Power comes from the language that is shared and passed between everyone but most live in fear knowing they cannot escape nor fight the government so they just accept fate and fulfil their roles in Gilead. Offred is one of the women who just accepted this when she had her first affair with Nick. Nick causes her to lose sight what she wanted and conformed to what he wanted and society wanted her to do. If she ever somehow escapes from Gilead it is most likely because Nick since he is a man and not because of anything she does
