Playing “The Game” helped me dive deeper into 1984 and the lifestyle the characters were forced to follow. My experience during this activity helped shape my opinions of the characters and their involvement in the novel. Playing “The Game” was difficult and took careful planning. While playing, I devised a strategy, experienced a wide range of emotions, and connected with the characters in the novel. Starting “The Game”, I struggled to find my place, but around the middle, I realized the best position to play. I decided not to have a major role in “The Game”. I kept to myself, didn’t talk about “The Game” to others, didn’t report to anyone the entirety of “The Game”, and followed

I thought the rules were easy to follow and were sensible. The only time these rules got hard was when I was around people not participating in “The Game”. Facing their judgment and questioning, I decided not to participate outside of the English class. I tested if this was possible by slowly dropping the rules and viewing where I got caught. Since I didn’t know who was involved in “The Game”, I didn’t know when to follow the rules and conform to Big Brother. Many times in the novel, Winston questioned who was against him. I faced this same question while playing “The Game”. “The Game” helped me understand the constant awareness that others are watching your every move. You never know who is against you and what they will allow you to get away with. This helped me understand Winston's fear after he committed a crime and didn’t know who saw or when/if they would turn him in. I saw how no one questioned Big Brother because of the power they held, both in the novel and “The Game”. People did what they were told, because of the fear of punishment. I connected with Winston in feeling angry when I realized the lies I was being told and forced to abide by. “The Game” helped me understand people's lifestyles in 1984, how easily they put up with the manipulation, and the desire to rebel when the truth was
