Maggie Jortberg The People on the Path to Authenticism Sue Cochrane encounters many different people throughout her life, as she mentions in her memoir The Crystal Gavel. Sue learns a multitude of lessons from each person she meets in her life. A lot of the people she meets do not make much of a difference in her life, however, a select few do. Sue learns a lot from these select people and she changes her whole attitude because of them. Sue is able to become and express her authentic self around these select people. This was especially challenging for Sue because she suffered from mutism, causing her to have trouble with making friends and speaking up in public situations. She was instead extremely motivated to get better and went to hundreds of Alcohol Anonymous meetings and countless retreats to help her become sober and she finally was able to. Sue had a support system from one person in particular during her journey to sobriety, and that was her brother Mick. Sue had three specific people that helped her and allowed her to become her authentic self, and those people were her mother, her brother Mick, and her friend Paul. I believe that one of the three people that helped Sue become her authentic self was her mom. This is a controversial statement because her mom was not the best and would not always be there for Sue, but I think that there are a lot of special moments that she and Sue share that help Sue become comfortable with herself and show her authentic self to the world. One instance is when she puts Sue in piano lessons instead of her brother, and this really helps Sue express herself. The piano lessons helped uncover Sue’s love for creativity and music, which led her to love writing poems and stories and eventually a
