Introduction
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Biotech defined cancer as the degeneration of one type of cell within an organism into something anarchistically powerful, and nasty… As this new cell-form uncontrollably proliferates and embeds itself in a tissue host, a tumor is born. When tumor cells later spread, the prognosis for its victim rapidly diminishes, a process known as metastasis. If detected at an early stage, cancer can be benign and solvable… but once the development of secondary malignant growths at a distance from a primary site of cancer occurs, it becomes a whole new challenge.
There are over a hundred different types of cancers, making it one of the leading causes of death in the world. Every year, 7.6 million people die from cancer worldwide. Out of this, 4 million die prematurely -aged 30 to 69 years-. African Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival rate of any racial or ethnic group in the US for most cancers. According to cancer.org, “the number of Americans with a history of cancer is growing due to the aging and growth of the population, as well as improving survival rates. Nearly 14.5 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2014, not including carcinoma in situ (non-invasive cancer) of any site except urinary bladder, and not including basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers.
