The Bigger Picture In today’s society, suicide is unfortunately a thing that has affected many people around the world. In Anthony Veasna So’s story “Baby Yeah,” an unbreakable friendship takes a turn for the worst because of a suicide. The mental battle the narrator experiences because of this unfortunate act, puts her through a very tough time. She fights drug usage, classmates, etc. The narrator only finds comfort in old poems, and music they enjoy together. The buildup of a happy friendship, to the slow decline of the narrator, really shows that suicide doesn’t just affect you. The hurt, confusion, and sorrows flowing through your mind and body is unbearable. The narrator's whole personality goes from quirky, doesn’t really fit in, to an angry at the world, sorrow filled person. In my opinion, suicide is a very selfish thing to do. Yes, this is a very controversial topic, but I’m okay with controversy. I say this because, you aren’t thinking about how your suicide could end up making someone who loves you go down the same track. In this amazing article, “Those Left Behind: A scoping review of the effects of suicide exposure on veterans, service members, and military families.” Amanda Peterson states, “One factor that may impact suicide risk is suicide exposure—knowing someone who has died by suicide or attempted suicide.” This means that the people around you could end up committing suicide also because they loved you so much, and can’t bear the pain anymore.
