Black ASL history and culture did not stop there as it persisted through the Jim Crow era, the great migration, the civil rights movement, and to present time. Black ASL is now celebrated and recognized as a formal language linguistically and culturally. McCaskill addresses the complexities of mainstream ASL, by emphasizing the importance of cultural responsiveness in deaf education geared towards methodologies and sociolinguistic perspectives.
