A case study that outlines this discourse in terms of priorities is the Oka Crisis. The Oka Crisis was an armed standoff between the Mohawk people and Canadian forces such as the RCMP and Canadian army. What led up to this 78-day standoff were the conflicting desires of the Mohawk people and the Montreal provincial government. Plans for developing housing and expanding a golf course were put into action on land that the Mohawk people valued as sacred burial grounds. A group of Mohawk people stood armed, protecting the land. Tensions rose when the Montreal government realized they were not backing down to allow for construction. To the government, the land was not of special meaning or significance to them. To the Mohawk people, the land development plans were disrespectful and violated a culture-rich territory.
