The black bass, the golden carp, and an owl, what do they symbolize? Maybe religion or evil, but what do these three key things represent? “Bless Me Ultima” written by Rodolfo Anaya, a best-selling author and a “modern voice and founder in Chicano literature”. In the story, a young boy named Antonio lives in the small town of Guadalupe, New Mexico with his family and Ultima. Ultima is a healer who helps Antonio find his heritage and beliefs. Antonio likes school and farming in El Puerto with his uncles, he also enjoys collecting herbs with Ultima and learning from her. “Bless Me Ultima” follows Antonio's journey with Ultima and his challenges. The black bass wants to be king of the fish, but in reality, he is more of a killer than a leader. According to Anaya “The black bass thinks he can be king of the fish, but all he wants is to eat them. The black bass is a killer.” (Rudolfo Anaya 113) Cico explains this to Antonio and he begins to believe that the black bass is evil and no good.
