Soccer terror By Brandt Caruthers As I laced up my cleats, I stood at the edge of the odds. The sun cast down a golden glow and lit up the whole pitch. Standing there listening to the national anthem on the center field line made me remember all the practices, hard work, and triumph that led to this moment. I didn't know what to feel besides anger. My heart belonged to his moment and I knew I only had one goal, to win.

As the national anthem ended we walked in a line hi-fiving the other team and we knew they could sense our electric energy. As we huddled together we were all fired up, screaming, yelling, and ensuring we knew defeat wasn't a possibility, we took our formation and waited for the starting whistle. The ball got immediately kicked back at me and then at that moment all of the nerves were gone. I played my part and passed it on to my teammates. After a few close calls and some amazing saves, this soccer championship match remained nill-nill at halftime.

As my team was walking off the field to grab water and freshen up, I noticed that the referee had pulled one of our players to center field for a conversation. As we were all sitting there wondering what was going on, the referee did something that you never want to see happen in any soccer game. We watched him reach into his front pocket and hold up a bright red card, ejecting him from the match. This meant we would have to play a 10v11 in the biggest tournament championship match of my life.

Starting the second half, you could tell our spirits were down. I walked out on the pitch, calling everyone together and giving one of the best speeches of my life. After that moment, it felt like I just poured gasoline on a raging fire. We knew the game was far from over but I knew even with a man down we still had what it took to come out
