Cure Violence www.cureviolence.org Cure Violence is an organization founded by epidemiologist Gary Slutkin. Dr. Slutkin spent a decade in underdeveloped countries, fighting epidemic diseases. When he returned to the US, he’d all but forgotten what it was like to have running water, and adjustable temperature in the home. He also had no news of the US, so he found it both dismaying and compelling to hear about the rampant violence in some parts of the US, most especially in Chicago, Illinois. As stated before, science has not yet 100% proven that violence is built into our DNA. However, there have been recent studies that show a minor link of aggression and the human gene. According to Julia Steiney, a writer for The Providence Journal, Monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), dubbed “the warrior gene,” has recently been mentioned in the study of genetic influences on aggressive behavior. This gene is found on the X chromosome, where males have one and females have two. It regulates the release and breakdown of enzymes so that once they fulfill their job, the enzymes don’t build up or interact with other receptors, causing problems for communication between regions of the brain.…

The goal of the guns, testosterone, and aggression research report was to test whether interacting with guns increased testosterone levels and later aggressive behaviors. The researchers used 30 male college students from the age of 18 to 22 as their subject, getting extra credit in return. To protect the results of the experiment, subjects were told they would be participating in an experiment that examined taste sensitivity in males. Since their saliva would be taken for hormone analysis, subjects were asked not to eat, drink, smoke, or brush 1 hour before testing. After sitting 6-ml of saliva into a cup their testosterone levels were tested.…

The pre-frontal cortex of the brain is responsible for planning, reasoning and, most importantly in consideration to aggression, impulse inhibition. Whether or not a person behaves aggressively may well be a factor of whether or not they are able to successfully resist the urge to be aggressive. Serotonin is implicated in this mechanism as, in normal levels, it seems to have a calming inhibitory effect on neuronal firing in the pre-frontal cortex (Cases, 1995). Therefore, low levels of serotonin may disrupt the calm inhibited firing of neurones, with the result that individuals are less able to resist the impulse to be…

One common mental illnesses, Schizophrenia, has multiple studies performed to see why violence either has happened to themselves, or why this mental illness is blamed for the cause of their own violence acts. Perpetrators who commit violence acts such as rape, emotional/behavior abuse, physical abuse are looked to see if they have any form of mental illness. According to Nederlof (2013) “Since the 19th century, it has been widely acknowledged that people with a mental illness are more often involved in violent crimes as compared to healthy populations.
