Born in Compton, California, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is easily recognized as one of the greatest rappers today. From releasing his first mixtape in ‘03 under the name K. Dot to winning a Pulitzer Prize, Kendrick has moved from underground rapper to global star. It started in middle school when his English teacher, Regis Ingis, decided the kids needed an outlet for their aggression and suggested poetry (Moore, 63). Due to the prominent gang violence in Compton between the Crips and the Bloods, Kendrick's upbringing wasn't the easiest part of his life, but his father was there to try and steer him on the right path and considering where he is now, it worked. Despite his intentions, any person that wasn't listening closely could have easily, and did, misinterpret his usage as a “woke” straight man normalizing slurs. Liem perfectly says “Any use of a slur out the wrong mouth destroys our ability to recreate oppressive power structures, and not even a Pulitzer prize winner should be an exception. In conclusion, from Kendrick Lamar's controversies to his outright opposition to social injustices, he has become a prominent voice in pop culture and hip hop music. These moments stand as pivotal in his career. They reflect his commitment to artistic integrity and social commentary. Regardless of the backlash due to his confrontational style in delivering provocative lyrics, Kendrick Lamar continues to use his platform to consciously address race, identity and systematic injustice. Through this, he manages to remain unapologetically honest.
