Plastic has been one of the most revolutionary productions ever created for mankind and is been widely used since it was created. More recently, a dark side of our massive plastic use, when released into the ocean, it turns into microplastics. This research paper with go in depth in the background that causes these microplastics in the oceans and the effect they have on the environment. Endless studies are being conducted to measure trends of microplastics and potential solutions are being researched and implemented to combat this ever growing issue. Before getting into the problem, we need to know the sources to microplastic pollution. Microplastics are a relatively new technology, being developed post-WWII, they were quickly adopted for mass production because of how easy it was to produce and inexpensive compared to the products of the time. At the time, plastics were seen as a modern marvel with little to now downsides. Little did people know that plastics have a major flaw, they do not biodegrade much like organic matter down. Besides a small amount of plastics incinerated over the years, every bit of plastic ever produced is still somewhere in the world, whether it is being used currently or disposed of in the environment[5]. This flaw has brought on one of mankind 's biggest environmental dilemmas and the problem continues to grow by the day.
