Odysseus Is Not A Hero In Homer's Odyssey

According to George S. Patton Jr., “The real hero is the man who fights even though he is scared.”In the Odyssey, Odysseus tries to get home, but he fails. Along the way, he travels through many islands. Odysseus shows he is not a hero because he has left his men, he killed lots of people because of jealousy, and he taunted the Cyclops after he and his men escaped the island.

Odysseus shows he is not a hero when he taunts the Cyclops after escaping the island. The men had just escaped the Cyclops and got on a boat when all of a sudden, Odysseus yells, “O’ Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? Eater of guests under your roof! Zeus and the gods have paid you!’”This highlights the idea that Odysseus is not a hero because he can’t keep his mouth shut.

Odysseus returned home and found out there was a contest being held to win his wife's love and Odysseus didn’t like this. Soon after he discovers this, the paragraph states, “ Soon the room is reeking with blood.Thus the battle with the suitors comes to an end, and Odysseus prepares himself to meet Penelope.” This shows that Odysseus is not a hero because heroes don’t kill people, heroes are supposed to protect
