I was sold to a better master. He was a European American. After being sold, we went through this long process of my paperwork. This country was so much prettier. The trees were everywhere and tall, cows looked healthier. They had ranches everywhere with nobody in the fields we passed. I questioned, “where are all the workers” , he responded “ma’am we take care of our animals here unless you would like to help”. There had been new and improved machines for cotton ginning, smaller homes but with bigger yards on each side of the towns we passed through. I became so confused because back where I was, it was our full responsibility to take care of the animals and the housework. When we arrived, the man showed me around the house and around the yard to let me know where everything was if I ever had questions. I still couldn’t believe how nice this man was being. I was able to work full time as a in-house slave. He gave me the chance to eat whenever I needed to. Working here was a very big difference compared to where I was in Africa. All the slaves on this plantation were much happier because they had food to eat, somewhere to sleep that was in a good condition, and their owners would take care of them no matter how sick, old, or tired they got. It’s like they didn’t believe in treating people in a bad way. On days that I didn’t have that much work to accomplish i’d go outside every now and then to watch the horses, water the plants, read the newspaper or play with his 2 kids, if they needed help with anything I could help them. Me and the owners Kids had became so close, they always wanted me to help them with their school work. They wanted to help me with anything also. I was still a slave but I loved how my life was now. Life had been
