What is dream? Everybody has one. Dream as power push us to go forward; make us to do and encourage us to live. In the novel of Of Mice and Men, the characters created by John Steinbeck also have their dream. The story’s background is based on the Great Depression, the time that people have to move and look for jobs to live. George and Lennie are two main characters in this novel, they have a dream to have their own land one day. Since they have been working on the new ranch, they have met different people and there are people who wants to be with them to make their dream come true. Following the character’s story, we would see what were those people’s destiny in the end. Candy, an old swamper who work on the ranch for a long time, who is …show more content…
Dream is also hope for Lennie. George and Lennie like brothers. If George’s dream is to have their own land, Lennie’s dream is to live with George. Dream is a hope, it will encourage Lennie to work hard and to be happy. Lennie makes George to tell him about that dream place again and again. When George warns him not to talk to Curley’s wife and do not involve in the fights. Lennie would listen and ask George: “ how long’s it gonna be till we get that little place an’ live on the fatta the lan’-- an’ rabbits?” and “ tell about that place”(56). Even though George already told him last night, but he just never going to tired about that. Lennie could image that there are animals, rabbits around him, they live in their own land. Nobody going to bother them or hurt them, they will be free. Until the end, Lennie still wants to hear something about that places from George. Lennie was scared and he knew he did the bad things, that dream is still a hope for him. It is really sad that George has to shoot Lennie while Lennie was dreaming about that place. Dream is a hope for Lennie, but the end, dream is a dream.
Dream gives hope to both Candy and Lennie. It changed them and made them different. The ending is sad, finally the dream won’t come true. But in the story, we did see some differences. A different Candy, he argues back Curley’s wife, protects Crooks and Lennie; a different Lennie, he is not smart, but he wants to help and try his
