When a person becomes ambitious their eyes are only on the prize. They intend to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goal. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth one can see this idea being portrayed by the two leading characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth seems to be the one who pushes Macbeth to be ambitious. When Macbeth becomes ambitious he kills people that might be a threat to his crown. Throughout the play one can see that ambition was the driving force of the play because Lady Macbeth and Macbeth had wanted to be king and queen. Lady Macbeth was the one who initially became ambitious after reading Macbeth’s letter. The letter was a key element that led Lady Macbeth to become ambitious. Lady Macbeth says that the “letters have transported me beyond” (I.vi.64), which means that she is thrilled with the idea of Macbeth being a king. She goes on and says that “the future in the instant” (I.vi.66), this indicates that Lady Macbeth’s mind is made up and now she can see how the future will look like. She wants this dream to be true and now she has gotten a deep desire to make Macbeth the king and herself the queen. When Lady Macbeth imagines this it opens up the cruel side of her. Lady Macbeth says “unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty make thick my blood.” (I.VI.50-53), this reveals her evil side.
