The topic that I chose for this assignment was the national Canadian summer sport, lacrosse. It is one of the oldest team sports in North America, being played as early as the year 1100 by First Nations peoples. The main objective of this sport is to score the most by shooting the ball into the opposing team’s goal. It’s important to note that there are differences between men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse. We will go over the basic rules and differences in this part of the assignment.

The Algonquin called it Bataggataway, and the Iroquois Nation called it Tewaarathon. The sport received its current name when French settlers saw the stick used for playing and were reminded of a bishop's crozier, staff, or cross. In the early 1800s, people from Montreal became interested in the sport themselves. This led to the first game of lacrosse between the people of Montreal and the First Nations being played somewhere in the 1840’s. After years of games, the establishment of more and more lacrosse clubs, and increasing interest in the sport, it was finally declared the national game of Canada in 1859. Now in the modern day, lacrosse is played and enjoyed by the public. Athletes, fans, and those who are just finding out about the sport have the resources available to check out the sport, either in person by going to an actual Lacrosse game or by watching a game play out in the comfort of their own home by watching sports channels. Looking back on our national sport's humble beginning allows us to realize how far it's come.
