My first Holocaust Survivor was Kurt Pauly. Kurt Pauly was born in 1927 in Germany. His father was a soldier for the German Army during WWI and because of this, he saw warning signs of Hitler and the Nazis. Kurt's family owned a meat business and eventually the Brown Shirts boycotted the business. This caused his family to want to escape. Their first plan was to go to the United States but this was unrealistic when their last relative in the U.S, Uncle Max died. Kurt's father and mother found a way to go to Palestine under an agreement causing them to escape in 1933. His father worked in a trucking business with his nephew, Walter. She was born May 1st. Her father was a cattle dealer and the Nazis started taking away a lot of their profits, causing them to become scared. Her father was forced to stop working in 1937. November 9th, 1938 is known as Kristallnacht when many Synagogues were burned down. Jill remembers this day well, and it haunts her today. She saw flames and heard people screaming. They escaped to a city where the rest of her family was at. Her sister is 4 years older, causing her to better understand what was happening. Her father and a few other family members were able to escape to Kenya, causing separation for 9 months. During this time, she had a difficult life. Her sister was really brave and was not scared. Papers came from Kenya, causing her and 17 other family members to escape in June of 1939. When she arrived, they had joy finally seeing their father. She made many friends in Kenya but lost both grandparents during that time. When she was 12, the war was over. She didn't fully understand it until she arrived in New York City. She had a period of anger and depression, but with the help of an organization in New York that helped immigrant Jews, she was grateful to
