The artwork that I am choosing to examine is Koinonia by Letitia Huckaby, created in 2021. This art piece is housed in the McNay Art Museum as of 2024, and it is composed of pigment prints on fabric with wooden embroidery hoops. Letitia Huckaby focuses her works of art on different injustices faced by African Americans within the United States (“Letitia Huckaby: Koinonia - McNay Art Museum”). This particular art piece is in reference to the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. On September 15, 1963, in Birmingham, Alabama, the Ku Klux Klan placed a bomb on the front steps of the church, killing 4 little girls and severely injuring another (16th Street Baptist Church Bombing (1963) (U.S. National Park Service)). Each hoop displays silhouettes of different girls. I feel the artwork would be classified as representational because it realistically represents the subject. The piece looks as though you are looking at the shadows of those girls that stand on the other side of a floral printed fabric. Each floral fabric is different: the flowers are all different sizes and vary in color. The fabric is given a visual texture, giving the viewer the impression that it is wrinkled by resting on the girls’ shoulder. Using outside knowledge, and before reading the plaque, the viewer may be able to come to the conclusion that the silhouettes are not only young girls, but also African American girls. This information is given to the viewers by looking at the hairstyles and physical features the girls possess. A deeper analysis of the piece reveals the elements and principles that Letitia Huckaby uses. An eye-catching element is its implied depth.
