“Different is acceptable,” is a concept that is promoted to many young adults, but is this a sincere statement? Society abide by certain behaviors, beliefs, or characteristics. Many individuals do attempt to stray away from social norms, but often times these individuals are treated as abnormalities and are outcaste by family and friends. Fear of being an outcast for not following social norms that are being taught by society, leads to assimilating characteristics that individuals are not comfortable with.

Many individuals have been both emotionally or physically harmed because they are not like everybody else. Judith Butler shares a story of a boy who walked and talked differently, and was often described as feminine. He committed suicide after hearing snide remarks and withstanding physical harm due to his “abnormal” actions. Females and males have conformed to act certain ways and wear certain things that exclusive to their sex and due to the discrimination they might face, individuals embody their own stereotypes. Individuals have to blend in with their environment to avoid being treated as an abnormality.Vershawn Ashanti Young shares his story about the difficulty about being and an unmanly and educated black man in “Prelude: The Barbershop.” He mentions that everytime he enters a neighborhood barbershop full of black men, the men talk about topics that do not interest him like sports and wore jerseys, He makes an effort to assimilate within his own black community, but he is not comfortable with himself.
