“Honor” is a story that illustrates the patriarchal nature of the Arab culture. There are two different families described in this story each with contrasting beliefs. The first family exhibits a progressive lifestyle while the second family is a traditional Arab family with Muslim beliefs. Throughout “Honor” I was introduced to many different characters who all demonstrated a different view on family.…
The narrator of the short piece The Moths is a fourteen-year-old girl. She is an unusual girl, who is quite different from everything and everybody, especially the feminine world. The girl from the story is entitled as being rebellious due to lack of respect, non-stop confronting her family members and being immature. She is not as “pretty or nice”, nor does she do "girly things". The story itself has many stages, themes and it gives the ability to the reader to sympathize with the protagonist while she is going through different situations.…
In her book, New Tribalisms the Resurgence of and Ethnicity discusses the nature of ethnic, Joane Nagel discusses the nature of ethnicity and its relationship to culture in the United States. Mikhail Naimy’s short story, “His Grace” expresses a message that supports Nagel’s claims about ethnic identity and cultural construction. Nagel acknowledged that the socially constructed aspects of ethnicity are flexible, elective, and constantly negotiated. By delineating the Bey’s interactions with Roukus Nusour and Abu ‘Assaf, Nagel’s argument that ethnic identity and the culture formed inside it are constructed both internally and externally. Ethnicity is formed by a combination of many identifying characteristics unify groups of people.…

Jared Diamond’s article “The Worst Mistake in the Human Race” provides critical insight to what archaeologists and anthropologists alike have contested to be the pinnacle of human advancement. Agriculture to many people among academic settings has been mutually agreed as one of the turning points from primal to civilized (Diamond, 1999); and has been known to benefit humanity for it’s greater good. Jared Diamond challenges this point in his article. He begins by introducing a progressivist view, which is the held notion that agriculture was adopted simply because it is a means of getting more food for less work (Diamond, 1999). Diamond thoroughly explains that there are advantages to agriculture, being that of convenience and mass production…
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down explores the relationship between the Hmong culture and the American culture; in particular the differences in medicine. Medicine has been a difficult subject to understand and master; moreover it becomes almost impossible if the person was raised in an entirely different culture than that of western medicine. This book discusses what it was like from both sides; the Hmong and those of the western doctors what it is like to deal with each other when it involves a common interest. That common interest being Lia Lee, an epileptic Hmong child. Both of the parties cared for Lia Lee; however their cultural differences were enough to distract from the real goal.…
As explained in his infamous essay, “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race,” Jared Diamond argues that the adoption of agriculture led to many negative consequences that have hindered the general livelihood of humans. His argument is based on the comparison of the lifestyles of agriculture-based societies and hunter-gatherers, claiming that the latter lacked many of the challenging aspects that emerged with the beginnings of domestication and civilization. Diamond’s main points of focus are the negative health effects of people’s new diet, the increased spread of diseases, and the development of societal inequalities. In general, I agree with Diamond’s claim that the adoption of agriculture had some negative effects on humans,…

At a young age, many individuals are told of how they should behave and how they should think. To this day individuals are pressured to conform to society’s standards. These rules and expectations were established and kept in the interest of the human need to belong. However, history has shown that these expectations negatively impacts an individual’s development. The struggle in pursuing a belief different to society’s is challenging.…
That challenged the way I saw the world. It seems that the world is captivity by “mother culture” in a sense that relationship between humans and the world is like a dictatorship. Humanity above everything in the world has become a dictatorship and anything other than humanity is under them. They use the world’s resources and reproduce drastically without concern of the world. Also, Ishmael brought to my attention that humanity has in fact proclaimed that they are more evolutionarily advanced then species.…

The short story “The Summer my Grandmother Was Supposed to Die” by Mordecai Richler illustrates the overwhelming, unjust pressure imposed on women in the 1950s. The media pushes an impossible, unrealistic body in today’s modern society which is hotly debated; however, in the 1950s, women were expected to be more than a perfect body. They were expected to be a perfect wife who takes care of an inordinate amount of work at home and does not express herself. The short story centres around the grandmother of a family who is said to have a month left to live but who ends up living for seven years.
