The Jefferson Memorial has over three million visitors annually, with an impressive statue of Thomas Jefferson. The memorial is shaped like the pantheon, Jefferson loved this shape because it symbolizes unity and power. It is located in the title basin. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is important because it reminds us of how he helped build our country. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial was built to honor one of our founding fathers and the author of the Declaration of Independence. The Jefferson Memorial was built around the Pantheon and Monticello, Jefferson’s home. There were four architects for this monument. It represents the five main authors of the Declaration of Independence. The statue on the inside has Jefferson’s birth and death dates inscribed on it. That statue has Jefferson in his middle life holding the Declaration of Independence in his left hand. Here are five quotes from the Jefferson Memorial. One of the quotes is in the “Rotunda”, the others in the “Southwest, Northwest, Southeast, and finally Northeast porticos”. The “Rotunda” quote is "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." This is from a letter to Benjamin Rush on September 23, 1800. The Southeast quote is from a letter to Samuel Kercheval on July 12, 1816. The Northeast quote is from multiple sources: “A Summary View of the Rights of British America”, “Notes on the State of Virginia”, “The Autobiography”, a letter to George Wythe in 1786, and finally a letter to George Washington in 1786. The Northwest Quote is from “A Bill Establishing Religious Freedom” made in 1777. Last but not least, the Southwest quote is from the Declaration of Independence.
