A fight for survival, a lost identity, abuse, resilience, and a found family—that is the story of Saul Indian Horse. The novel Indian Horse takes place at the height of residential schools in Canada. In this period a large portion of the country was in position/view of discrimination against indigenous communities. The novel follows Saul’s life, him being abandoned by his family, and his journey in residential school, where he faced physical and mental abuse as they tried to assimilate him into Western culture and erase his indigenous identity.
