As Alexie talks about how he became the reader he is today and the struggles he went through he uses the example of the “Paragraph”. The moral of these statements is saying that just because you are a “ Indian boy” means you can't read. The absurd reasoning behind this statement is ridiculous for us to believe that is it true. Alexie easily portrays the fact that a young indian boy is able to read but the proof the he starting thinking of everything as a paragraph. Alexie speaks on how “ his father loved to read so he would love to read.” a boy going in the footsteps of his father but is constantly put down because of his race. We look at this and notice that Alexie had a growth mindset, he wants to be like his dad and love to read. When he is faced with the struggles though of the fixed mindset Indian boys he still works through. It hurts to see that a boy that wants to learn how to read is being cut down day by day just because he is a “ Indian boy.” These statements made by Alexie makes it seem as if we are teaching our children that they need to be stupid to get through life.
