Mental health disparities among Black Canadian adolescents show a significant gap in public health policies. Despite Canada having a universal healthcare system, Black adolescents face constant barriers to access to mental health services, exacerbating disparities in mental health outcomes. Institutional racism permeates healthcare facilities, leading to discrimination, implicit biases, and unequal distribution of resources. (Salami et al., 2022) Moreover, cultural factors contribute to the stigma surrounding mental illness and hinder help-seeking among Black adolescents. This study aims to illustrate the significance of confronting institutional racism and promoting mental health equity by looking at the obstacles Black adolescents encounter in getting culturally competent mental healthcare. Institutional racism and culture within the healthcare system contribute to disparities in access to mental health services among Black adolescents, worsening mental health challenges and increasing inequities in outcomes. The research question for this study is “How does access to mental health services and culture affect experiences of mental health in Black Canadian adolescents?”.

Through the research that I have done on this topic, I have a better understanding of the significance of mental health disparities among Black Canadian adolescents. The areas that I focused on were access to health services and culture, such as discrimination, racism and marginalization. Researchers have identified systemic barriers such as long wait times, limited access to providers, and discrimination within healthcare systems, worsening the disparities in mental health outcomes.
