Pollution is the largest occurring factor. Pollution that we cause from the land is entering the reef causing the water to become unsanitary and dirty. To grow and thrive coral reef it is essential that the water situation is clear and salty water that has low levels of phosphorus and nitrogen. This is impossible to accomplish if pollution is infecting our reefs. To be exact, reef industries contribute 5.4 billion dollars to the Australian economy. The Australian Government committed $200 million over a period of five years (2008-09 to 2012-13) to improve the quality of water entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. This staggering amount of money meant that reef was saved. Because a reduced amount of phosphorous and nitrogen is now entering the reef, it prevents damage to coral and allows already damaged coral to become healthy again. “Fight for the reef organization”. WWF and Australian marine conservation society have teamed up to fight for the survival of the Great Barrier Reef. They speared awareness for many different problems that affect the reef. In 2016 this year they set up a surf festival and competition called salt fest that raised thousands of dollars.
